Black Forest (Czech)

Glassworks began appearing in the Black Forest of southwestern Germany as early as the beginning of the 13th century. Small settlements often grew around them, providing homes for the glassmakers and their families. Charcoal burners and potash producers soon followed, supplying essential materials for glass production.

Wood was a vital resource for the industry. The glass made in these forest workshops was often contaminated with iron oxide, giving it a distinctive greenish tint. With seemingly endless supplies of timber available, glassmakers moved their operations to a new location every few years. Their families later converted the abandoned sites into farms, where agriculture and livestock provided additional food and income.

As a result, countless farmsteads were established throughout the Black Forest. Many of them eventually developed into towns and villages.
